On Thursday, March 13, Y-Säätiö marked its 40th anniversary with the Kotien voima seminar at Musiikkitalo, followed by an evening celebration at its Pasila office building. More than 200 invited guests came together to celebrate the foundation, which has grown into one of Finland’s largest rental housing providers and a pioneering force in homelessness work both nationally and internationally.

The seminar began with perspectives from Y-Säätiö, presented by CEO Teija Ojankoski and Chair of the Board Maria Viljanen. In her speech, Viljanen emphasized the importance of prevention in ending homelessness: affordable housing must be available for all, and supported housing solutions must be provided for those who need assistance in daily life.

Teija Ojankoski welcomed the guests at Musiikkitalo.

Ojankoski reflected on Y-Säätiö’s 40-year history, highlighted the value of collaboration, and introduced the anniversary theme and slogan:

“Four walls can change a life. Forty years can change a society.

This encapsulates the core of Y-Säätiö’s mission, its purpose, and the power of homes.”

At the end of the seminar’s first session, the stage was shared by Y-Säätiö’s former CEOs, Hannu Puttonen and Juha Kaakinen, who collectively led the foundation for more than 35 years. Puttonen and Kaakinen warmly reminisced about memorable moments, sharing stories that brought laughter to the audience.

Ira Hammermann interviewed Ari Hulden, the founder of Homeless Academy, which represents Finland in the Homeless World Cup.

The day’s host, Ira Hammermann, guided the seminar audience through Y-Säätiö’s three strategic priorities: resident well-being, the transition to carbon neutrality, and ending homelessness. These themes were explored through a series of interviews featuring M2-Kodit resident Maija Hallikainen, Sami Päivärinta from AFRY Finland Oy, and Ari Hulden from Homeless Academy.

A global perspective on Finland’s homelessness reduction efforts was provided by Matt Downie, CEO of the UK-based charity Crisis. Downie emphasized that Finland’s success in reducing homelessness has been instrumental in proving to policymakers in the UK and beyond that ending homelessness is truly possible.

Finland’s Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Sari Multala, congratulated Y-Säätiö on its 40th anniversary and expressed gratitude for its work in tackling homelessness. In her speech, the minister underscored the crucial role of municipalities, wellbeing services counties, and the National Programme to End Long-Term Homelessness in homelessness prevention efforts.

The seminar concluded with a deeply moving and insightful speech by philosopher Esa Saarinen. In his unique way, Saarinen placed Y-Säätiö’s work within the broader Finnish narrative and mindset, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

A Presidential Message and an Evening of Celebration

The festivities continued at Y-Säätiö’s Pasila headquarters, where CEO Teija Ojankoski opened the event. This was followed by Chair of the Board Maria Viljanen reading a message from President Alexander Stubb.

“Homelessness in Finland declined for more than a decade as a result of persistent efforts. Unfortunately, the trend has now reversed, and nearly 4,000 Finns are currently without a permanent home—many of them invisible to society’s gaze.

Finland still has the opportunity to become the first country in the world where everyone has a home. This goal would remain a distant dream without pioneers like Y-Säätiö leading the way in ending homelessness.

Homelessness is a circumstance, not a defining characteristic of any person. If someone struggles, we help them together. This fundamental principle was the foundation upon which Y-Säätiö was established 40 years ago.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to all past and present employees of Y-Säätiö. You have helped thousands of Finns through the Housing First approach. Thanks to your work, many individuals experiencing homelessness have been given the chance to be seen and heard.”

President of Finland

At the evening celebration, guests enjoyed delicious food and drinks in honor of the anniversary year.

The evening in Pasila continued in great company and a joyful atmosphere. We thank all our guests for making yesterday an unforgettable day and extend our gratitude to all our partners for their collaboration and support over the years.
