Housing first

Learn how Finland has tackled homelessness through collaboration, innovative housing solutions, and the Housing First model.

Y-Säätiö has played a central role in developing and implementing the Housing First model in Finland. As one of the country’s largest non-profit housing providers, Y-Säätiö acquires, builds and renovates affordable rental homes for people who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of losing their housing.

The work goes beyond providing apartments. Together with cities, wellbeing services counties, NGOs and housing professionals, Y-Säätiö develops housing social work and promotes practices that support long-term housing stability.

In Finland, Y-Säätiö coordinates the Housing First Development Network, a network that brings together professionals and organisations working on homelessness. The network enables the sharing of knowledge, expertise and good practices and supports joint development across the sector. Its goal is to strengthen homelessness work within wellbeing services counties, expand and embed the Housing First model, and further develop effective approaches to ending homelessness. The work of the network is funded by STEA.
