Y-Foundation produced a handbook in English to help everyone engaged in work with homelessness and those interested in the theme. International media interest was again high during the year.

The handbook was published in October 2017.

The A Home of Your Own book, produced by the UY-Foundation, aims to reply to questions concerning the means by which homelessness has been successfully reduced in Finland.

Not only Y-Foundation’s experts, but also an extensive group of experts in homelessness work experts from different organisations took part in drawing up the book. In addition, the book includes interviews of people who have experienced homelessness. The book was sent to Y-Foundation’s stakeholders and distributed among the media. This resulted in more media hits.

Media attention also continued in 2017

In 2017, our operations were featured in approximately 120 international media articles across the world. The fact that homelessness is declining in Finland, while elsewhere the trend is the opposite, attracted international interest to Finland. The spearhead theme of almost all articles was what other countries could learn from the homelessness work carried out in Finland.

The most interest came from the United Kingdom, with lots of media requests received from there. One of the most significant ones was the visit by TV channel ITV to Y-Foundation in November. The news feature provided Y-Foundation and Finland with a lot of visibility.

In addition to visiting Y-Foundation, representatives of several media outlets visited housing service units which apply the Housing First principle and met with experts in the state administration and associations, as well as tenants who have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives.

During the year, 24 groups of experts from around the world visited Y-Foundation. Political leaders, civil servants and professionals in homelessness work from various organisations took part in the visits.

For example, Sajid Javid, Britain’s Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government visited Y-Foundation in April.
